Getting Your Friends to Read
Getting your Friends Club members to complete their required Bible reading can become quite a challenge. Sponsors tell us all the time, “We will do almost Anything to get our girls to read their Bibles!” Here are a few ideas that are sure to get your girls reading:
- Have a Bible Read-a-thon. Your girls will need to enlist friends, family, and other church members to sponsor them for each portion (verses or chapters) of the Bible they read. You simply need to create the necessary sign-up sheets and plan a date, time, and location for your girls to read. Providing snacks and/or games for periodic breaks would be a great way to “keep the energy flowing!” Some groups have even used the money raised as an additional Coins for Kids offering.
- Implement DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) in your club meetings. You’ll be surprised at how much extra reading your girls can accomplish in fifteen-minute increments. Having DEAR time at various, unexpected moments in your meetings will keep your girls guessing.
- Girls will do almost anything for a prize, especially when chocolate is involved. One sponsor promised her Friends girls two M&Ms for each verse they read in the Old Testament in a one-week time period. Each girl was allowed to choose her favorite variety. By the end of the week, one of her girls had earned over 500 M&Ms!
If you keep your incentives fun, creative, and different every time, your Friends girls are sure to be excited and to “go for the prize.”
